A good word from our Governing Board Member, Chris Norris (NRLA)

Updated: Jul 15

The Governing Board acts as a champion for Good Landlords, strategically driving the Charter forward to deliver the outcomes and benefits for all renters across Greater Manchester.

We got the chance to ask some questions to our Board Member, Chris Norris, Chief Policy Officer for the National Residential Landlord Association (NRLA).

Why have you decided to be involved in the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter?

“We were attracted to the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter because, unlike a lot of other initiatives, it set out to emphasise and encourage the positive. Whilst it is obviously essential that we deal with bad actors in housing, it is also imperative that we identify and support those landlords and housing providers that make a difference for the better. The NRLA has always believed that good quality housing is essential for positive social and economic outcomes, and the Charter is based on recognising the important role played by landlords in ensuring those outcomes.”

What about the Charter is most important to you?

“Collaboration. From the outset, the Charter has been developed and guided by landlords, tenants, and local government, with the opportunity for each of us to understand the others’ challenges and world view. Previous attempts to establish something like the Charter have failed because there is insufficient understanding of the people and businesses involved in making housing work. Crucially, the Good Landlord Charter seems to have this balance about right.”

Why do you think Landlords should sign up to the Charter?

“To show just how good you are!

Landlords who already meet the criteria have nothing to lose by signing up and can demonstrate their exceptionalism straightaway, whilst landlords who need to make some minor improvements will be supported and helped along the way. All the while advertising their commitment to providing great homes.

Signing up to the Charter will be a way to demonstrate your commitment to being better, even if you’re not perfect on day one.

Being a landlord is tough, and getting tougher, finding a way to differentiate yourself from the rest can only be of benefit.”
