The Governing Board acts as a champion for Good Landlords, strategically driving the Charter forward to deliver the outcomes and benefits for all renters across Greater Manchester.
We got the chance to ask some questions to our Board Member, Amber Barry, Strategic and Private Sector Housing Manager for Wigan Council.
Why have you decided to be involved in the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter?
“I have decided to be involved in the Charter as I think it’s a great opportunity to bring about some parity, and a shared standard and ethos, between the social and private rented sectors. Working closely with various private and social landlords in Wigan, I am keen to have a role in shaping the Charter and ensuring it adds real value across the rented sectors. I also think it is a novel and welcome way to identify and celebrate some of our best private landlords across GM – those who provide quality housing (and/or strive to) and genuinely care about their tenants – but are not always fairly represented. ”
What about the Charter is most important to you?
“For me, it’s that the Charter does more than your standard landlord accreditation scheme. These schemes purely reward the ‘good’ landlords, whereas the Charter recognises that it is not as straightforward as that; sometimes landlords need some time, structure, and support to get them where they need to be, especially the smaller or newer landlords, and the two-step approach to membership allows for this.”
Why do you think Landlords should sign up to the Charter?
“Landlords have nothing to lose in signing up to the Charter. It is a quick, easy sign-up process, and once a registered Supporter, landlords will have access to bespoke advice, incentives, and support to help them meet the full membership criteria. We are in a period of real change for the private rented sector (with the upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill), and I’m sure all landlords would benefit from some extra guidance and steer in helping them to both meet their new legal obligations, and to be a cut above the rest. ”
