Terms of Use

Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter Champion of the Charter Terms of Use

Property agents play a vital role in promoting higher standards in the private rental sector. While agents are not eligible for Membership of the Good Landlord Charter (the Charter), they may become Champions of the Charter, provided they comply with the following terms of use.

These terms are intended to guide agents, protect the integrity of the Charter and ensure its accurate representation to landlords, tenants, and the wider public.

1. Role as a Champion of The Charter

Provided agents have received their Charter Introduction Briefing, agents who have registered as Champions of the Good Landlord Charter should:

  • Promote awareness of the Charter to landlords and tenants.

  • Ensure all members of staff are aware of the Charter and able to promote it to landlords and tenants

  • Act in good faith to encourage eligible landlords to pursue Charter membership.

  • Refer landlords to the Good Landlord Charter Implementation Unit for support in their journey to become Supporters and Members.

  • Encourage landlords to apply for membership if they meet the required standards.

  • Use approved Champions of the Charter materials in marketing and communications.

2. Restrictions on Representation

Champions of the Charter must not:

  • Claim or imply that the estate agency or its business is a member of the Good Landlord Charter.

  • Claim or imply that all landlords represented by the agency are Charter members

  • Use phrases such as "Charter Approved Lettings", “Certified by the Charter,” “Compliant with the Charter”, or "GLC-Accredited Landlord Network" in reference to their own services or portfolio.

  • Use the Charter logo or name in a way that suggests general accreditation or endorsement of the agency’s business practices, staff, or marketing activities.

Example of unacceptable wording:

“All our landlords are part of the Good Landlord Charter.”

“We are Members/Supporters of the Good Landlord Charter”
“We only work with Good Landlord Charter landlords.”

3. How to Refer to the Charter and Landlords Who Are Members

Champions of the Charter may:

  • Refer to the Charter as a free and voluntary standard of best practice for landlords.

  • Say that they advocate for the Charter and its goals (e.g. promoting fair, safe, and high-quality rental housing).

  • Publicise when a specific landlord client is a verified Member, using the correct Charter logo or materials provided.

When referencing landlords who are members of the Charter:

  • Champions of the Charter may state: "[Landlord Name] is a member of the Good Landlord Charter" or “This property is managed by a GLC-accredited landlord,” provided this can be verified through the Charter’s records.

  • No general statements may be made about the agency’s portfolio or management practices based on the status of one or more landlords.

4. Use of Logo and Promotional Materials

Champions of the Charter will be provided with specific branding assets marked “Champion of the Charter” (distinct from full Member logos). Agents may use these assets:

  • On their websites, in a designated section about the Charter.

  • In printed materials or email communications aimed at landlord engagement.

  • They may not use Member logos, seals, or certification badges.

All use of the Charter assets must adhere to the Good Landlord Charter Brand Guidelines.

5. Monitoring and Breach

The Charter reserves the right to monitor usage of its name and materials. If a Champion of the Charter is found to be misrepresenting the scheme or violating these terms:

  • The Charter reserves the right to review how agents use its name and branding.

  • Misrepresentation may result in a public statement of disassociation and revocation of any promotional privileges.

  • The Champion of the Charter status may be revoked.

6. Commitment to Ethics

By signing up as a Champion of the Charter, agents agree to:

  • Act in good faith to promote the aims of the Charter.

  • Provide accurate information to landlords about the application process.

  • Not use the Charter in a way that could mislead consumers or diminish the integrity of the scheme.

7. Collaboration

Champions of the Charter are encouraged to:

  • Provide feedback on landlord interest and engagement with the Charter.

  • Facilitate introductions between landlords and the Charter team.

  • Participate in training opportunities and engage with the broader work of the Charter.

  • Participate in promotional campaigns and/or recognition events.
