Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter Champion of the Charter Terms of Use

Property agents play a vital role in promoting higher standards in the private rental sector. While agents are not eligible for Membership of the Good Landlord Charter (the Charter), they may become Champions of the Charter, provided they comply with the following terms of use. 

These terms are intended to guide agents, protect the integrity of the Charter and ensure its accurate representation to landlords, tenants, and the wider public. For organisations within the housing supply chain that do not let or manage property, please join as a Friend of the Charter.

 

1. Requirements to become a Champion of the Charter
  • Demonstrable commitment to the principles of the Charter.

  • Membership with a reputable accreditation scheme or professional body, which includes training.

  • Commitment to publicise the Charter to landlords and property asset holders and facilitate Membership for interested parties.

2. Role as a Champion of The Charter  
  • To be onboarded, a representative should attend a Champion briefing on the Charter and/or meet with the Implementation Unit team to discuss the role of the Champions.

  • Promote awareness of the Charter to landlords/property asset holders and tenants.

  • Ensure all members of staff are aware of the Charter and able to promote it to stakeholders. 

  • Act in good faith to encourage eligible landlords/ property asset holders to pursue Charter membership and refer or facilitate their journey to Membership

  • Use approved Champions of the Charter materials in marketing and communications. 

 

Examples of how organisations can demonstrate they are fulfilling the role of Champion:

  • Add a link to the Good Landlord Charter on their website. This will enable stakeholders to find out more easily.

  • Share information about the Charter with tenants by adding documentation/information (provided by us) into the initial paperwork bundle or welcome pack.

  • Include the Charter in a newsletter or social media post – all copy and images will be supplied by us.

  • Invite the Implementation Unit to deliver an awareness-building session on the Charter to staff and/or landlords/asset holders.

 

The GLC Implementation Unit offers:

  • A Champion of the Charter logo

  • Invites to Good Landlord Charter network events.

  • Opportunity to participate in knowledge-sharing events with Good Landlord Charter stakeholders.

  • Exclusive newsletter and sector events, which will offer national policy and research developments.

 

3. Restrictions on Representation 

Champions of the Charter must not: 

  • Claim or imply that the organisation is a member of the Good Landlord Charter. 

  • Claim or imply that all landlords represented by the organisation are Charter members 

  • Use phrases such as "Charter Approved Lettings", “Certified by the Charter,” “Compliant with the Charter”, or "GLC-Accredited Landlord Network" in reference to their own services or portfolio. 

  • Use the Charter logo or name in a way that suggests general accreditation or endorsement of the organisation’s business practices, staff, or marketing activities. 

 

4. How to Refer to the Charter and Landlords who are Members 

Champions of the Charter may: 

  • Refer to the Charter as a free and voluntary standard of best practice for landlords. 

  • Say that they advocate for the Charter and its goals (e.g. promoting fair, safe, and high-quality rental housing). 

  • Publicise when a specific client is a Member, using the correct Charter logo or materials provided. 

When referencing landlords who are members of the Charter: 

  • Champions of the Charter may state: "[Landlord Name/Building] is a member of the Good Landlord Charter" or “This property is managed by a GLC-accredited landlord,” provided this can be verified through the Charter’s records. 

  • No general statements may be made about the organisation’s portfolio or management practices based on the status of one or more landlords. 

 

5. Use of Logo and Promotional Materials 

Champions of the Charter will be provided with specific branding assets marked “Champion of the Charter” (distinct from full Member logos). Organisations may use these assets: 

  • On their websites, in a designated section about the Charter or in a footer. 

  • In printed materials or email communications aimed at landlord/asset holder engagement. 

  • They may not use Member logos, seals, or certification badges. 

All use of the Charter assets must adhere to the Good Landlord Charter Brand Guidelines. 

 

6. Monitoring and Breach 

The Charter reserves the right to monitor usage of its name and materials. If a Champion of the Charter is found to be misrepresenting the scheme or violating these terms: 

  • The Charter reserves the right to review how organisations use its name and branding. 

  • Misrepresentation may result in a public statement of disassociation and revocation of any promotional privileges. 

  • The Champion of the Charter status may be revoked. 

 

7. Commitment to Ethics 

By signing up as a Champion of the Charter, agents agree to: 

  • Act in good faith to promote the aims of the Charter. 

  • Provide accurate information to landlords/asset holders about the application process. 

  • Not use the Charter in a way that could mislead consumers or diminish the integrity of the scheme.
